I'm looking for some input on which welder to buy this spring.  I like the Lincoln 305D (3 cyl Diesel), The Vantage 300 and 400.  All 3 are compact and fairly light, the 305D is the cheapest but I'm not sure about the 3 cyl engine do you think it can keep up burning 5/32 and 3/16 as well as gouge with 1/4 carbons for the years of service I want?  I want this next machine to last.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

i noticed you run a 305g to. I burned 3/16 on a tank floor for a week straight no prob but it really sucked the gas im sure the diesel would do it too on less fuel. My  buddy was gouging with a trailblazer all day and it fryed, I try to avoid alot of gouging with mine. I heard about electronic gremlins in the vantage 300 but lots of guys runnin the 400 with no prob and not a whole lot more money. Im looking at a new machine too but im gonna  go back to a DC gen. type machine.  just don't know about spendin 12000 on a brand new one

My only complaint is the gas consumption with my Ranger, I would keep it but want a diesel for the long term reliability. I might just put the the gasser in my garage for a back-up too, not sure yet.
Parent - By JescoPressure (**) Date 01-11-2008 02:06
i know im keeping mine for back up. But i hate runnin a diesel truck with a gas welder. I want to put a big aux. tank on my next skid

by a miller, lincoln trys to over think a lot of thier new stuff like this chopper crap.  millers are bullet proof.  the old pipe liners are a hell of a welder but look at the duty cycle, not much.
Parent - By JescoPressure (**) Date 01-11-2008 02:07
that chopper technology makes them a pretty good pipeline welder for an AC generated welder

I'll stick with what I know works, Lincoln has never failed me.

you know it brother, the blue is nice in the shop but i like grey ( or red on the back of my truck)
Parent - - By Justin O (**) Date 01-12-2008 19:01
miller pipe pro will smoke a lincoln..  Just paint it red or gray if you like the color and want a good machine.

lol i welded with one of those a month ago looked up and was in the hole its a pos if u ask me but thats my opion, the arc is all wierd and puddle is way too small and i had her cranked up
Parent - By Justin O (**) Date 01-15-2008 02:51
ha ha to each his own.  I here crap all day at work thats why I always talk sh** about lincolns.  I have 3 Sa200s but prefer my new Pipepro since I am 1000 miles from home. No problems so far.
Parent - By JescoPressure (**) Date 01-16-2008 00:45
ha ha tell me that while your getting the board replaced in it

From My point of view, if You are looking for long service life You will want a machine that welds at 1800 RPM not 3600 RPM. If the motor runs half as fast it will last twice as long. If You are going to operate at high amperage [gouging] get a big machine. Regardless of color.

I have to agree with you Dave, the Vantage 400 looks pretty good to me, the Canadian dollar will help with the price by spring time too.

I got a big blue 402D miller got a 4 cylinder diesel I can burn 1/4" all day and 3/8 gouging rods all day run it between 8 to 12 hrs a day I have to fill it up once a week, unless I work 7 day a week its got 9120hrs on it. I have had it about 8yrs. The only problem I had with it was the timing beld broke, but that was my fault.

any body heard about the new miller 350D w/3cyl kubota diesel, says it will run up tp 140 amps at idle, got a trailblazer now and have had no problems, from spoolgun to suitcase to air arc 1/4" carbons, tig and stick, and plasma off the 220 plug. oh ya and thawing water lines too.

I am thinking of purchasing a Lincoln 300D. Any thoughts on how much fuel this burns? Oh, and I have heard they are a good reliable machine. Thanks.
Parent - By SPARKYCA (**) Date 01-12-2008 18:18
I have a 300d w/ perkins.  It burns approx 1.8 litres /hr on an average day welding 2-6" pipe or structural work. It now has almost 5000 hrs on it and other than general maint. the only things done on it were a new water pump and a voltage sensor for the 110 v circuit. It starts well in the cold. There have been times I wish it had more auxiliary  power for running an air compressor etc. If I was to replace it I think I would go with the Vantage 300 OR 400. I believe the miller 300 pro would also be good. I have found that a diesel will burn almost half the fuel a gas machine will when you get into burning bigger rod or wire.

Parent - - By Justin O (**) Date 01-14-2008 02:26
duetz is a good engine they last forever and i have never had any problems
Parent - - By bullsnbets (**) Date 01-14-2008 02:37
of course you haven't had any probs. you have to actually "use" the machine. :)
Parent - - By banshee35 (**) Date 01-14-2008 03:00
i've got a classic 2 withe duetz and it is a piece! in the shop at least once a month. fixing to trade it in on a 200d.
Parent - - By Justin O (**) Date 01-14-2008 03:05
engine probs or welding end
Parent - - By banshee35 (**) Date 01-14-2008 03:09
engine-electrical though. First the kill soleniod, then the murphy switch and now the fuel system i guess. I was welding some 6" sch 40 last week and it was surging up and down  while I was burning some 1/8 7018. It wouldnt keep goin. Took it off and put on my 66 sa200 till i get things straightened out.
Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 01-14-2008 22:53
Let me know if you are serious. The Classic 2 I have in my rental fleet, I wouldn't trade for the world. Just gotta be careful who rents it. They tend to run them out of fuel.
Parent - - By banshee35 (**) Date 01-16-2008 02:08
I'm seriously considering trading it in. Its always something with this thing. It vibrates to damn bad, always has something going wrong w/ it, just want something more reliable. It is great on fuel though, a tank lasts forever in this machine. Whats wrong with the kubota in the 200d?
