Up Topic Welding Industry / Inspection & Qualification / Quick tabbing code book(s) for CWI test??

Should I just quick tab my 1104 code book, or do they also allow other text(s) during the open book portion of the test??  I'm also trying to decide if I need the 1104 study guide or not.  I purchased the 1104 code, Welding Inspection Handbook and the Certification Manual for Welding  Inspectors.  I'm pretty sure all they allow in the open book portion is the Code book but figured I'd ask.  I'm toying with buying the books on symbols and vocabulary also but I may hold off til I can get an employer to absorb some of the costs.  Given the price of AWS publications I had expected to receive hardbound volumes.  .  . but all the ones I bought were soft cover.

You will only be allowed the code book you selected for the open book examination and an index/table of contents. No other guides or outlines will be permitted.

All of AWSs codes and standards are soft bound.

You can also use a highlighter on your code book.  This helped for me.  Highlighting the titles for every paragraph made it real easy to read.   Don't go too crazy with the tabs as they can hinder fast use of the book. Don't forget the first pages with the reference sources. Keep the tabs confined to the tables and areas the instructor suggests, if you're lucky enough to have an instructor who actually covers API-1104 in detail.  The instructor we had sent us back to our room while he concentrated on D1.1 but I hear this is not how it's normally done.

You are correct on the binding on the AWS publications.  Mine fell apart on the Cerfication Manual for Welding Inspectors.  It just came apart and I had to tape and glue it back together.  The inspector at the AWS book manufacturer must have missed it.

I have also found it helpfull to write in page numbers, when the code book references other parts of the code such as tables figs ect.

Good idea Mike!!  I'm going to try that.  Should be a timesaver.

I could be mistaken, but I believe that you are not allowed to use a code book that has been written in for the open book exam. Tabbing is acceptable, and I believe highlighting also. Just something to check on ahead of time so that you do not end up having to purchase a new code book last minute and lose any acceptable help aids you have invested time in.

You can have written notes in your code book, but not loose "Post-its" in between the pages.

My code books always have notes in the margins, forwarding addresses, and page numbers of figures tables, and referenced paragraphs. I never had a problem with any test proctors.

Al,
Has this always been the case? Maybe this was just a Hobart thing, but I distinctly remember bieng told not to mark or write in the code book I was going to use for the exam.

To the best of my knowledge AWS has always allowed you to make notations in the book before the examination, but not during the examination. I can't tell you what was permitted befor 1981.

I had writing in my code book, along with highlights and tabs, etc. I even had copied the index and stapled them together and was allowed to use them for the exam. they do stress that you CANNOT write in the code book during the exam or you will be escorted out of the room.
you cannot have loose papers in your book either.

ctacker has it right. I tested in Jan. and it was as he says. No one in my class did the index thing though. I thought that would have been considered loose papers.

I just came back from the CWI seminar and test in Phoenix, AZ.  The topic of writing in the code book was covered at the seminar, you are allowed to write, highlight, and/or tab anything you want BEFORE the test.  If you are caught doing it during the test, your test will be stopped immediately.  You are only allowed to write on the testing booklet if you need scratch paper etc.

This all makes sense, maybe I just enterpreted it wrong when I was told this. Sorry for the misinformation.
