Well John,

Your question gave me an opportunity to go to my brand new Welding Aluminum: Theory and Practice by the Aluminum Association.

Very good reference.... The bad news is that I really could not find a recommendation that could be provided without knowing the grade of casting.

The warning that applies to 4043 fillers would be to avoid it with High Mg content alloys like 5083, 5086 or 5456.

A356 is a common filler selection for cast aluminum.

Bump.

Any guesses other than Lar's about the grade of ally Edelbrock uses in their cast manifolds?

Just looking for anyone who has modified or welded on one and what filler did you use....

4043 for the record. If I can't put a number on the base metal, that's where I always started. No sunken ships yet!

4008 or 4009 would be the best choices but can be hard to find, 4043 would be my next choice.

I agree with Lawrence on the A356 casting

I use 4043 on cast intake mani's and fittings all the time and have never had any probs. When in doubt of base material composion use 4043. Thats my rule of thumb. ;-)
