We are TIG welding .250-500 thickness range plates in 1G position. We are having pretty good results using 1% tungsten 1/8 inch dim. with the welder set at around 200 amps using a 75% Argon 25% Helium mix shielding gas and 4043 filler rod .090 Dim.  I would like to increase welding production time. I was thinking of going to a 5/32 dim 1% tungsten with the machine running about 225-250amps and increaseing the shielding gas mixture to somewhere around 60% Argon and 40% helium. Any thoughts?

You got that right Lawrence!

You dont say whether the weld is manual or auto.  Yes the helium would help, but more helium would make manual welding more difficult - but not impossible though.

let me rephrase. On this specific Alm chassis we are welding both GTAW and GMAW. The problem is there or some areas that GMAW cant be done,(Ackward and tight spaces). So I am trying to give the welders more options for faster smoother production on the GTAW side. This is a military application and the welding has to be done perfect.
