what is the best way to keep metal on a long weld from drawing out of shape?

What type of joint is it? The backstep method might help.

Does it need to be welded the whole way down?  Can you possibly go smaller on the weldsize and pick up your travel speed? Like said above you might have to just skip around on the seam and make it pull to your advantage.

yes it does. we are building a water table for a plasma cutting machine. 1/4 inch plate to 1/4 inch plate. we tacked it in several places then welded it solid and it still warped. it is 8' x 24 feet. any new suggestions on stopping warpage? it is got a good 1/2 inch up hill on both ends now.

What size weld are you laying down?  What process? What mode of transfer if GMAW welding it?  Sounds like your going to have to jump around on it.  Tack some gussests on the inside and weld solid on the outside

start it out with a reverse bow, and let it draw itself straight
