What are really the true differences of the codes?

570 and 510 along with 653 are not codes. They are standards for the inspection and repair of 570-Pressure PIping 510-Pressure Vessels 653- Aboveground Storage Tanks. The standard references codes: ASME Section IX and V along with B31.3 for 570, ASME Section IV for 510 and D1.1 for 653. One of the definitions and questions in the CWI exam is the difference between a code and a standard.

Don't forget section VIII div 1 and 2, also the National Board Inspection Code.  These are refered to by API 510 as well.  To be honest API suggest good engineering practices.  Personally I thinck API reads a little easier than the "Codes".

ASME VIII is Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
API 510 is Pressue Vessel Inspection Code

Both have word "Code" at the end. I'm confused on why you mentioned API 510 is standard.

Appreciate your explanation.

Well hush my mouth. 570 and 510 are codes. 653 is a standard.
Now what is the difference between a standard and a code?

ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) are code books that relate to new construction. You will reference these if you are working in Run & Maintain of in-service pipe and equipment. However, in order to find what you need in the code books you will use API 570 for pipe and API 510 for equipment. The API standards always reference you back to the original design code.

Hello guys,
Found this post while researching API 510 and thought I would really confuse the subject.
ASME IX - Page 1 - ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code - Qualification Standard for Welding and Brazing Procedures........
ASME B31.3 - Page 1 - ASME Code for Pressure Piping, B31 - An American National Standard
AWS D1.1 - Page 1 - An American National Standard - Structural Welding Code - Steel
API 650 - Page 1 - API Standard 650 - No mention of code.

So it appears that there is no difference with ASME and AWS regarding codes/standards but API uses standards.
There you are, clear as mud.

"some standards are considered to be mandatory, this means the information is an absolute requirement. a mandatory standard is precise, clearly defined and suitable for adoption as part of a law or regulation. these mandatory standars use such words as "shall" and "will" because their requirements are not a matter of choice. Codes are examples of mandatory standards because they have legal status."

"there are a numerous standards that provide important information, but are considered to be Nonmandatory. an example of a nonmandatory standard would be a recommended practice. they are nonmandatory because they provide other ways in which objetives can be accomplished. nonmandatory standards include words such as "should" and "could" in place of "shall" or "will"
