The correct one for welding would be specified in the contract documents.

Section 1704 in the 2006 IBC covers special inspections required by the ICC Building Code.

Section 1704.3.1 notes that welding inspection shall be in compliance with AWS D1.1

I would probably breach copyright laws if I shoot you a copy of this section but I can try to answer your questions on this.

Thanks Bob,
Our shop is going for AISC and the ICC was brought up,
Is the IBC required to have in order to get AISC,we do not currently have it but i am thinking of purchasing it regardless,
We have a long way to go,but we are trying.
If you could tell me a little more as to what all it covers it would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply,Bob

IBC is not a requirement in order to obtain an AISC certification.

There is a library list of books, docs, to have on hand during the AISC audit...this list can be found at AISC.org or you can follow this link to QMC(the outfit that performs these audits for the AISC).

Hope this helps,

IBC is primarily for buildings.  It also covers similar structures.  If you are not building something that requires a building permit, you can ignore IBC unless IBC is referenced in some other job specs.  IBC is generally to protect the public in their use of buildings and similar - again, if you're not going for a building permit, you can ignore IBC.  All the special inspections in 1704 are to satisfy the Building Official, which doesn't sound like your task.

Best wishes,

Bob,
We are mainly a structural steel shop, all welders and wps's are qualifide through AWS D1.1.
The bulk of our work is beams (welding clips ect.) columns ,ect. any structural work that goes into produceing buildings or any structural component.
We do not do the erection.

Thanks again Bob,
