I do a great deal of TIG welding with mild (1018) steel. While I believe I have mastered the beginning and general length of the bead, my termination points have either dimples or craters. I have tried lowering the amperage gradually, lowering it abruptly, making smaller and smaller circles, etc. What should I be doing to obtain smooth termination points?
Try adding a little filler metal as you terminate the weld.

TRY ALSO BACKSTEPPING OVER PREVIOUSLY DEPOSITED WELD METAL WHILE STILL ADDING FILLER METAL.

hey, try bumping the the button on your torch (tapping)several times at the end of the weld. this will let the crater fill in. if you are using a foot pedal try backing off of the heat as the part heats up. if the crater is caused by the weld melting through you will need to increase your weld speed or decrease your heat at this point or both. experance helps. be well and good luck. jman
