What do you guys think the advantages of using Lincolns ER49S-6 vs just your typical ER70S-6 wire would be.  I stumbled upon one of our guys welding up a part with this wire and I asked him why the special wire and he said told me it was because the part was cast steel.

Er49S-6 and ER70S-6 are the same I believe. The CSA spec uses different units for tensile strength.

Here is the text from the Lincoln product guide.

Conformance
AWS A5.18: ER70S-6
ASME SFA-5.18: ER70S-6
MIL-E-23765/1: MIL-70S-6
CWB W48-01: ER49S-6

Kix,

AWS A5.18: ER70S-6
ASME SFA-5.18: ER70S-6
MIL-E-23765/1: MIL-70S-6
CWB W48-01: ER49S-6

Appears to be the same?

They are the same.  Just CSA's designation.

That's what I came up with as well so now I need to do a cost analysis to make sure our supplier isn't just trying to make a buck of of us.  Thanks guys!

FYI - the "49" is the strength designation in SI units (kPa) and is equivalent (although not exactly equal) to 70ksi.

I think the newer AWS specs include the SI units under the designation "M" (e.g. A5.18/A5.18M)

80ksi sound right? I think thats what I read.

Yeah, 70 series wires usually are well over 80ksi in tensile strength.
