Just a question someone asked me why on a fillet weld symbol is the size of the weld always on the lefthand side. Can anyone answer this?

ANSI/AWS A2.4 Standard Symbols Figure 2 shows it on the left. The right side of the symbol is reserved for the length and pitch of welds. However, the tail and the arrow are interchangeable. To answer your question it is done to eliminate confusion.
