I believe the D1.X welding codes list 1/16 inch as the maximum gap between the backing and the underside of the joint.

Thanks Shane. I'm on the road this week and don't have D1.1 with me.

If these welds get UT (ultrasonic testing) I would push for a tight gap.  I have seen some large gaps under the backing bar contribute to some tough UT calls.

What happened to the wording of "intimate contact?"  I don't have my code book at home but I believe that's the wording they use.  The backing bar shall have intimate contact with the member being welded.  I'll have to try to remember to look this up tomorrow.  Chris

Chris,
5.22.1.1 Faying Surface. The separation between faying surfaces of plug and slot welds, and of butt joints landing on a backing, shall not exceed 1/16".
The only "intimate contact" I know about has nothing to do with welding. LOL!
Hope that helps,
Regards,
Shane

I don't believe it's ever been "intimate contact". Going back to 75 D1.1 It states:
3.3 Assembly;
"The seperation between faying surfaces of lapjoints and of butt welds landing on a backign shall not
exceed 1/16"
I believe you've gotten this confused with another code. I've seen/heard the terminology used before,
but not in association with D1.1

Maybe this is what brought that term to mind.

D1.2 2003
4.7.1  Positon
. Backing shall be in
intimate contact with the root side
of he parts being welded.

Good find Lawrence!...I have seen it too, but couldn't remember where.

I guess Lawrence has been in intimate contact with D1.2
