I dont know if I will be of any help, but to me being a welder only for about 4 years the part I feel is the most important for me is getting full penetration and good tie ins in my root pass.  When I finally got the hang of the root pass, it seemed like all the rest fell into place.  Getting a good fit up and tacks are really up to you as a welder.  As for the amps on the 200, sorry but I weld on a miller bobcat 250 (dont laugh) .Just dont get discouraged, and good luck.

When something is hard, then you need more of it. Get some scrap pipe and practice capping the bottom. You know, rotating it and just staying on the bottom. This is difficult stuff which is one  reason it pays reasonably well, so a lot of drill is to be expected, I think.

If your doing an open root down hill anywhere form 80-100 amps will work. Start at the top, Choke your 6010 in and have a drap angle the whole time. You can run hotter down hill nthen uphill. For fill use 6010 5/32 on 5 inch or larger pipe for your fill its faster then 7018. Cap with 7018. It may be against code if it calls for a 7018 fill but they will never know because of the 7018 cap. Sometimes speed is everything, I hate when it is but its better then going home. 6010 is a nasty dirty rod the spatter goes everywhere. Make sure you have a good file to get rid of it.

Lawrence,
  Amen, my friend.

I look at this from two standpoints.

#1: I hate to see this kind of advice and this practice.

#2: I love it because these are the types of welders that warrant our existance.

So without the abundance of short cutting, non welding wannabee's that must utilize practices such as has been described because they are incapable of doing it the right way, it might be a little more difficult to make a living doing what we do.

Thank the good Lord above for people like these, as well as for people like us that keep them in line.

John
