My RT company said that there is only one company in the US that manufactures Ir., and that the reactor has been down a few months.  They can't get any new sources, so they have been using weak, or, depleting ones.

Hello guys,
I was pretty sure we used to get our Iridium sources from Canada for years back in the early 90's (we were based in New Zealand). Is that correct or am i having a lapse in memory ?
Cheers,
Shane

So are Canadian sources still available in the US?

My company buys sources from spec and inc and we have had a really hard time getting them, spec doesnt have any material until atleast the end of may last i heard and inc is having trouble with the reactor.  we had 4 sources back ordered and recieved 4 80ci sources all in one day. Im not sure what tech ops has going on with sources, my brother works for a company that uses them and they dont seem to have any trouble getting sources last i heard.

I just recieved an update email as follows:"We do not have source material and do not know when we will be able
to obtain any"

I believe radiography is about to have a problem in 75 days, which puts us right at the start of outage season.
I believe if Se75 will perform your work and your licensed for the same, it would probably be a real good idea to get in the q for them given their extend half life. While these companies will eventually catch up, it cannot help but run thin if there is anything more than a half life backlog.

what are shot times for Se75 compared to Ir192, i know you can use them at smaller strengths and they have a longer half life but other then that i dont know much about it, is there somewere i can study up on it

Shot times are a bit longer depending on Ci strength. Se75 per curie is not as strong as Ir192, but does provide a cleaner shot and longer half life.
Figure roughly a 1 ci ir192 to 1.8 ci Se75 ratio for shot times except for thicker members where attenuation is higher. If your primary work is all 1.5" and up Se75 is not for you. If it's < 1.5" Se75 would be a valid solution.

QSA Global (Sentinel) says they're selling sources but they have a backlog till August.

With the price of oil and the amount of work now, there is a worldwide shortage of not only sources, but RT Techs as well.

I've considered cranking again for that reason. The $$$ being offered for that is tempting, but not tempting enough yet.
