Are you refering to a radial crack on a 5/8" dia. x inch headed weld stud with the crack on the headed part?

As I recall, 1/4" 'should' be ok.

Check with your supplier and/or the stud manufacturer ... Accept/Reject criteria.
I use a lot of "Nelson Studs" and they will e-mail or fax whatever info you need.

Looking at sec 7.2.5 and fig 7.1 in the 06 edition, I get this out of it: 1) the crack or burst (same thing) can not extend more than 1/2 the distance from the head periphery (outer edge) to the shaft, and, 2) cannot exceed the value from: .25(H-C). SSSSSSOOOOOOOO, if the head diameter of a 5/8" shear stud= 1 1/4", shaft is .625", then .25(.625)=5/32".
which I take to mean that up to a 5/32" crack is allowable within the first 5/16" from the outer edge. Per code. Which pretty much gives you your coarse of action. I apparently have either too much time on my hands, or had too much coffee today.

Yup, I've done exactly what Jim did there...called the mfg .... they then asked me to mail the studs in question to them and they sent them back to me with all of the acceptance/rejection criteria. I am very complimentary of Nelson's handling of the situation and I copied their letters and sent them on to our folks in the field to have on file just in case an inspector should raise the flag/question, like we did when we saw these radial cracks before shooting the studs onto our work.
