I would like to adivce from some veterans about moving west as an independant welder. I have heard from alot of people that there is plenty of money to be made in the oil fields of Texas. I am a proficiant welder that would like to travel while I'm still young. I have a Red Face machine mounted on a rig and thinking of heading west. I just don't want to waste my time if it isn't worth it. I am very confident in my welding ability and have experience welding pipe, but not much fitting experience. I would mainly like to know about insurance, equipment, and availability of work etc...
insurance is a must, im in odessa tx there is shit loads of work bu there is also a shit load of welders.
id try around Ft worth its booming there
You may want to hold up on that. I don't know how much you keep up with the news, but just north and east of Birmingham Al, A huge deposit of natural gas has been found. Given the growth in LNG, its a matter of time before that blows open in AL.
Go west, young man, and grow with the country.
They can not find enough welders here in Houston, Tx. Insurance is a must but I know of at least 3 companies hiring at the moment.

What dollar amount of insurance should be required?
You will need at least 1 mil/w 2mil aggregate. If you are very very lucky, it will cost you 1000 bucks bi annually.
That's not too bad I carry that here. From hearing people talk I thought it was an extreme amount. But I'm sure that the premiums will rise because of the nature of work.
L-Con construction here in Houston, Tx is hiring rig welders for a job in Meeker, Col. They are paying $29 for you $20 for your rig $3 saftey incentive and $90 per diem. There employment office is located in Deer Park, TX 77536 its on the outskirts of houston.
Good luck

That's very interesting. Meeker is about 40 miles away. So 52 per hr, 90 a day. Hmmmm.......How many welders do they need I wonder??
