Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / E-6010 vertical down too?

Reading about E-7018 Downhand? topic (july 14,00), I am traing to know if that kind of considerations apply to E-6010 as well.
We have an internal spec. wich say taht it only apply vertical down.
the weldment will be for a 36" Dia 1" thk. API X52 welding in 6G position. the WPS indicate the root pass will be made uphill & the other beds downhill. I'm traing to know the best technical consideration and its support?

Root and hot passes in pipe have been successfully welded in both directions using E6010.

My preference is uphill only because I haven't been shown how to do it downhill and therefroe am not very good at it. People working on gas/oil pipelines do alot of downhill and from the ones I have seen are very good at it.

If your specifications and/or welding procedures indicate a specific vertical direction then I would stick with that.

You have to be careful about cracking at the root bead if you use downhill welding.
1) Reason
- low heat input due to high speed welding
- restraint is high
- hydrogen content at the weld is high with E6010
2) Considerations
- immediate 2nd pass welding after root pass
- preheating during welding
- use lower strength grade as possible
