I've been working on my downhill work, I need ya'lls honest tips or advice as what I need to wrk on, the 1st pic is the root pass inside the pipe, the 2nd pic is the hot pass, and the 3rd pic is the cap. The root and hot pass are with 1/8 5p+ and the fill and cap are with 5/32 5p+.

Thanks in advance

pretty good if root is like that all the way around it will pass visual, hot pass looks like you ran it a tad cold , if you took wagon tracks out it will pass ,cap looks alright as long as you dont have undercut or pinholes you'll get by w/1104, practice makes perfect. I tell everyone whos breaking out ,that no one was born w/ stinger in hand , keep up the good work

if your using pipe bigger than 3" you can hot pass w/ 5/32 & practice w/ 8010 70+ 80% tests for pipeline use70+.

that pipe was 12" it was free with bevels already on it, can't beat that, what gap do you run with 5/32, and do you fill and cap with 5/32 or 3/16. Is there any difference in the 5p+ and the 70+

we're running 14 miles of 10" & 2 1/2 milles of 12"  & theres always a s_ _t load s left over, last line I wound up W/ 300' of 8". if i were you i would practice W/ 1/8 4 ur bead, my spacer is a 2" strap or banding that is used for strapping bundles of sq. tubing 1/16 give or take( probably less) . bead  with ur 5/32 would probably be 1/8th  depends what you feel comfortable with , hot pass, fill ,& cap on pipeline 3/16  on 12"  (but practice your 5/32 till you feel compf.) 5p+ is mainly your bead rod 70+ besides being a stronger rod is supposed to be better @ takeing out slag or carbon deposits bs bs bs  it's harder to weld but once you get the hang of it . it will leave a smooth weld or strait weld if u have wind blowing . 90% of welding procedures (1104) call for 1/8th stringer 5p+ the rest 70+

that gap was probally between 1/16 and a 1/8 i used a framing square, i tried using a 1/16 gap and have trouble getting my bead in the pipe and even with 4 good tacks it wants to close up, also where are you located? also do ya'll grind every start and stop on every pass?

turn the heat up , ( everyone has their diff. ways )  frame sq  a bit 2 much seems 2 me bigger gap lower heat & bead tends to come out flat, thats just me. when I test i'll set coupons vertical w 2 spacers tack front stick a wedge take out spacers tack back , then u have ur sides eye ball it which ever side has more gap tack that one , that'll pull ur other side ,set it on stands & get after it . I only grind starts when testing, i'll even grind hot pass lightly if i see slag that buffer wont get out . do that on a line & the guy's in the back will run over u. I live in Zapata Tx. way way way down south.

what size land do you guys use on 6" and 8" pipe sch 40.  would you use 1/8 or 5/32 5p+ for bead, and gap size 3/32 or1/8.

I've never paid attention to landing ,just slap grinder on there & flatten it out a bit, 1/8th 5p+ bead ,gap 3/32 -1/8th seems to much 4 me

You take out the wagon tracks, do mean don't stepp the rod at all? What size landing do you find right and you say use a 1/16 gap? I've been welding a long time, just not on pipe much and never had to x-ray anything, all I've welded on is oilfield equipment.

when testing I really try to get wagon tracks out  by grinding then i buff it ,step rod ,but you wont be running hot pass as hot as on pipeline.not more than a 1/16  gap depends on size of pipe also 4 example 2" I use a pretty big gap 4" & up a little tighter I'll see if i can measure the thickness of spacing tool landing never pd. attent. 95 % of our work is x- ray when i first started there was'nt very much of it now u can't get rid of them ,It's not so bad our's I've got them helping me grind & buff on their down time since I don't have a helper haha (hope they don't read this)
