Up Topic American Welding Society Services / AWS Learning & Education / Student looking for a general info handbook

Hello all. This is my first post. I am currently in welding school in my second quarter. I am looking for a handbook that gives general info that pertains to specific welding applications. I would like it to contain info like what rods are acceptable or best for certain types of metals, what rod sizes to use, and what settings to run the welder on. It would even be nice if it included things like what torch tips to use for a certain thickness of metal. We have a textbook but I would like something I could have to look over that would make it easier for me find when needed. Thanks for any replies.

Hello and welcome!
I'm a fellow student, however i'm in my last year as a welding engineer. good luck with your program.
hobart has some good books http://www.welding.org/cart/training/gwbooks.htm the pocket guide I'd reccommend it's something you can stick in your tool box and use for reference to information like rod size selection.  Hobart also has books on subjects like flux core etc, while they don't have too many tables with parameter information they do have good information about the individual processes and how to apply them.

the lincoln foundation has some good books too https://ssl.lincolnelectric.com/foundation/store.asp?PID=16&cat=8
Metals and how to weld them has many tables and information on how to weld everything from tool steels to cast iron and everything inbetween. I don't have any of the other books so I can't say.

hope that helps

Here is a guidebook, from Victor, for oxy-fuel welding, cutting, and heating.  It is one download, which has it in three languages, English, French, and Spanish.

Good luck, in your studies.

In addition to the excellent publications that have been suggested by Metarinka and motgar, I suggest you to enter The Welding Institution's site (www.twi.co.uk) and do a search in there. You'll find excellent information. The Welding Institution is in Great Britain what AWS is in the USA.
For a student like you, the more literature to study on the better.

If you are going into welding also consider learning to fit and fabricate weldments,It is much more satisfying and ultimately the road to higher pay and better opportunities for promotion. I suggest you check out THE WELDER/FITTER'S TRAINING GUIDE    http://johnstewartbooks.weebly.com/-welderfitters-training-guide.html
