there was a man that used to teach at hobart weld school that could do that and make a perfect weld every time. he could also do a open root weld blindfolded just by the sound the arc made. I've tried to do both over the years just glad I did it while no one was around cause I'd never out live it.

Sounds like underwater welding in zero vis conditions. Had an instructor in dive school that taught underwater welding that would tell you every thing that you were doing by listening to the dive radio. Took me years and lots and lots of rods to know what to listen for, and I actually figured it out teaching welding school. Kinda cool when you do figure it out, but underwater you can have your finger next to the welding rod and not burn yourself, that's how I can follow the contour of what need to be welded. Not sure how you would do that topside.

If he is that good I bet he can either roll the pipe or float upside down. Nah he probably uses mirrors and broomsticks if he is good enough to video it and put it on youtube for us.

That aint gonna shoot, I guarantee it. Yeah, there's no way you can see what the leading edge of the puddle is doing and if it's rolling over on ya while having your head way up there. He says that it's just 65psi chill water piping in the comments of the video. He didn't care what was going in for the fill passes.

I've have seen welders that could weld LH or RH just not at the same time if that weld passed he is darn good.
