Just an old trick that I made new again yesterday.

ah screw dogs, haven't made any of those in a couple of years.  we use them for holding pieces to the rig when welding underwater, then again we use hydraulic impacts for tightening them.

When I made dogs I would weld the nuts first and then when cold I would thread chase. Seems the nuts have a habit of shrinking after welding. Either use a grease like anti-spatter or plain grease on the threads to keep them clean. Another way to build dogs; that is a bit more expensive, is use all position hydraulic "bottle" jacks instead of the nut and bolt. thanx for sharing the photos.

I've found that by placing the corner of the nut instead of the Flat against the dog and welding, I don't have to chase threads. Have the bolt screwed in, smoke some acetylene (anti-spatter soot!) on the threads, weld them up.
A bit tougher to fit-up but it works!

Those are 1" A325 structural bolts, I ain't worried about the threads.

Looking at your clamps I just realized how wore out the threads are on all my clamps!

We get all these warnings about welding high strength nuts due to their heat sensitivity.  Anyone ever have one of these welded nuts crack?  This seems like a real test of the "rubber meeting the road", and I wonder how much we have to fear welding on nuts.
