Fillet welding thickness limit under Section 4.25 text and Table 4.11in the D1.1 2008.

I was asked a question today that I could not definitively answer. Based upon a 3/8" plate test as in figures 4.31 or 4.32, we qualify fillet welding by the text of 4.25. Is this fillet qualified to unlimited thickness, or to an effective throat no greater than 2T? My instinct tells me to limit the fillet to 2T when the plate is under 1", but the text surrounding this really isn't clear. Perhaps I am missing something?

metsocwi,
It looks to me that if you use Fig. 4.30 All positions 3/8" thick groove test plate you are qualified for unlimited thickness for fillet welds according to Table 4.9. I see you concerns with the verbage (4.23.1) (Fig. 4.31 & 4.31) limited thickness.

In Table 4.9 the 2T thickness applies to you if you use 4.30 & 4.31 (Horizontal) for groove weld qualification. If you use those for fillet weld qualifications you are qualified for unlimited thickness. That's how I see it.

Thanks for the reply. I just found the answer in one of the foot notes to the Table 4.11. The fillet is unlimited.

I apologize. I only had the 98 D1.1 with me so my references might have been incorrect. Current year is elsewhere.
