I would appreciate if someone can help me to solve this: ¿If I qualify a welder using the standard test plate for unlimited thickness using vertical position (AWS D1.1), the welder would be qualified to make joints in plate and pipe (¿only with diameters over 24 in?) on any thickness greater than 1/8 in, with fillet and groove welds (with partial and ¡¿complete?! penetration) in flat, horizontal and vertical positions?
I forgot to mention the issue abut the weld penetration and the use of baking or backgouge: The welder could make complete penetration joints welded from one side but only using backing or backgouging?
backgouging is addressing the second side of the weld(no backing bar)..ie, grinding the root out from the back side and rewelding, or most commonly using a carbon arc rod(with compressed air) and removing the root and rewelding.
