Up Topic Welding Industry / Inspection & Qualification / UT PJP?

I am a farely new Level II UT tech and we have some PJPs and what I had determined that I would just plug in the material thickness and scan until I see something that looks like LOP to see what depth it is at.

I would maximize the signal and then determine this by either SP or what the machine tells me.

Ex: 7/8 plate requires 3/4 DOP

     1/2 plate requires 3/8 DOP

I don't have enough room to see everthing in L1 so I go back to L3.  I also tried to set machine to the what the DOP is supposed to be instead of the actual plate thickness and whatever comes up at the end of L3 than check the depth according to the machine.

Does nobody ever UT PJP's?

Does anyone know of a website that may be able to give me some insight?

Thanks

What would your acceptance criteria be?

My level III tells me +\- .125

I've written procedures for it, and performed the work. However; that is at specific request of engineering as well as their specified acceptance criteria.
As a general rule of thumb, PJP's are not UT'd.

You should have a detailed procedure written by a LIII if this is done to any form of code. If you don't, then I would suggest raising that concern with the LIII you spoke of.

Gerald

I agree but what he has seems like there us a way much easier than what he has.

Maybe you could give me some more insight.

You just need to verify the depth of penetration, use your sound path and some math.

To stay clean, you should comply with your procedure. If you disagree with it and have a better way, talk to your LIII and try to get him to buy it off.

These new UT machines are just fantastic!

Personally speaking-I think everyone who learns UT should get something like a USM2 or a USK7 for at least a year.

I had to learn on the old analog machines, so I know it takes more knowledge to use them.  I know how to do the math and watch the display carefully enough.  I definately agree that everyone should use them and they will be much better techs.

I just wanted to get some input on this subject, I am just Using the SP and the depth of what the machine tells me.  Everything that I have done seems to be so good it might as well be a CJP.

Thanks for everyones input and I did talk to my LIII and there was some misunderstanding on both out parts.

AWS'ers,
Was an Instructor in Sacramento USA as part of www.orthotropic-bridge.org August 25-28, 2008 event I gave daylong class in welding inspection for bridges and about week of top people talking NDT etc. Most there did not know that normal UT does not pick up welding flaw in PJP's. I was told with a slow pace phase array would. Make sure you are not at the wrong end of a misunderstanding! I hope this is helpful.

I don't understand how it will not pick up normal flaws in PJP's.  If something is there between the root and the cap than it will show.

Check out the Commentary in the back of D1.1, I think it's C-26. That might help you.
