I do not know that much about structural work.  Curious about the flat plate at the butt welds of the columns.  Is that a common practice? Is not just butt welding the beams together acceptable?

The contractor wanted them there for reinforcement . They also doubled as a backing strip on the web of the beam.

That is  called a "fish plate".... I almost always "fish plate" a butt weld in a situation like that.
.

Why?  I can see the ones on the web as being useful to the initial fit-up as guides, but the ones on the flanges are redundant, no?

Yeah... I didnt even notice that they put them on all four sides of the beam.  2 fishplates would have been PLENTY.... I have never used 4 fish plates on one joint.
Guess it really isnt hurting anything, just unnessesary.

Not 4 sides 1 on each flange + 1 on the web = 3.  The one on the web was for the line up and backing strip.  Two on the flanges were for reinforcement.  That is the way they wanted it.

L8 x 8 x 3/4 x 2'  would have been much better reinforcement.
