Good morning guys,

We are having an issue welding 572 gr 65 to 316 ss plates using E810X - ni1- we are seeing centerline and toe cracking of some of the welds. Does anyone here have any sussgestions as to why this may be happening? Beyond the immediate - I believe that we need to change to a 309 FCAW wire, but I am still curious as to why the cracking would be happening with what we are using right now, and what steps could be done to negate the issue in the short term.

Thanks

If you estimate the diluted weld chemistry and plot on a Shaeffler Diagram, you will find that it should contain a significant amount of martensite using the E81T wire.  The 309 wire will push the as-deposited chemistry back into the austenite + ferrite region.  The short-term fix is the same as the long-term fix - remove the existing weld and reweld using E309 wire.  An alternate would be a nickel alloy wire, such as Inco 182, but that is an expensive alternate.

Quality0537,

What led to the decision to use the E810X-ni1 wire instead of a 309L wire which is common for joining CS to SS?  Just curious.
