I need to qualify a procedure to weld A216 to A572 Gr. 50 (CJP) and A216 to A53 std. pipe (Fillet) using E71-T8 (NR 232), I am not able to locate a plate of A216 for the procedure qualification. ASTM A216 is used extensively in pipe valves and other fittings, however we are using only a small saddle not large enough to test. Can anyone help me out?
Thank You,
Phillip Joe Jensen, AWS CWI #05061191, Hershberger Bros. Welding Inc., Las Vegas, Nevada

Considering the A216 is carbon steel what do you need the A216 for? I am assuming you're talking Section IX. Is this spec in QW-422?

It is carbon steel but not prequalified base metal in AWS D1.1 sec.3.1. In AWS B2.1/B2.1M this says group 2 but I am not familiar with this enough to know if it means it can be used as you would in sec.3.1 in AWS D1.1. Also it is Grade WCB I forgot to mention earlier.
Thanks for responding.

I might ask what the application for the alloy is. It may be easier given you can't find any to request relief in the form of an ASME qualification compliance (that is if you have a P1 qual in place-it may even be easier then you can qual using any material) as opposed to D1.1 where castings are not usually applied.
I have done this quite frequently when customers by default imposed D1.1 not really understanding what it is they are requiring. In fact,  I just did this very thing about two weeks ago. Spec said D1.1. It was duct piping. I requested ASME and was approved.

Thanks, js55 I will pursue this, however I have never worked with ASME qualification but I should be able to figure out what I need to do.
It's very possible the engineer will approve. Thank You Kindly, Phillip Jensen

Joe,
A foundry outfit can come up with a casting to ASTM or ASME qual but it is a different world! I hope this helpful.
