Up Topic Welding Industry / Inspection & Qualification / question ? general tolerances for intermittant weld spacing
- - By 100perpen (*) Date 07-06-2011 18:52
Is there a general tolerance for weld spacing application for inspection ?

ie .125 fillet 1.5 long at 3.00 spacing?  If the print tolerance is +/-.010 this cannot apply to weld spacing.  Is there something in the AWS standard or in the codes that specify weld spacing ( pitch) tolerances.
Would this be a percentage?

AWS A2.4 5.17 Weld Dimension Tolerance.
When a tolerance is applicable to a weld symbol dimension, it may be shown in the tail of the welding symbol or specified by a drawing note, a table, code, or specification. In all cases, a reference must be made to the dimension to which the tolerance applies. It also shows a pic of a fillet weld welding symbol that is showing a fillet weld on the other side with a pitch of 2-6 and in the tail it says " segment length tolerance +/- 1/4 "

D1.1 2.4.2.4 Says the minimum length of the segments of an intermittant fillet weld shall be 1.5".

I think the whole idea is if 1.5" is called out in the weld symbol, it must be at least 1.5" or whatever is called out...."speaking of effective length segemnts that are full section"

I think there is a typo in that reference. I don't have 1.12 in my 2010 edition of D1.1....it stops at 1.9

yeah it was a typo. It should be 2.12.2  I deleted it because it refers to minimum spacing and not tolerances.

Also note that 2.12.2 is speaking about built up members...so keep that in mind.

I was told by an engineer once that he used that as a reference for his intermittent weld spacing.  I thought that was a little odd because of the built up members thing.

Several years ago I received an interpretation from the A2.4 committee regarding intermittent fillet welds. Paraphrased, their response was:

The weld size is a minimum, the length is a minimum, and the maximum unwelded spaces is equal to the pitch listed by the welding symbol minus the weld length.

As long as the size is at least as large as that specified, OK.

As long as the increment length is at least that specified, OK.

As long as the unwelded space between weld increments did not exceed P-L, OK.

The fabrication document includes workmanship requirements, not A2.4. If the fabrication document has additional requirements, imposes different tolerances, or if the manufacturer/fabricator has working documents that provide more information, tolerances, etc., then the fabrication standard or working document takes precedence.

Best regards - Al

Good, clean, common sense.
