D1.1, (2010) Clause 3, Starting at 3.13.4 ending at 3.13.5.1. Question Can a prequalified procedure be wrote for (HSS) with no backing? And at 3.13.4 (1) Prequalified WPS's " where welding from both sides or welding from one side with backing is ( POSSIBLE ), any  wps and groove detail that is appropiately  prequalified may be used." What is the word POSSIBLE about ? (gray area)???

3.13.4 @ (2) , Nonprequalified Joint Detail : There are no prequalified joint details for CJP groove welds in butt joints made from one side without backing. (see 4.13.2 ) hint qualification. keep in mind this all falls under "Tubular Butt Joints"  To me this very gray and contradictive.

I will bite. LoL

1)Question Can a prequalified procedure be wrote,( written) for (HSS) with no backing? No
2)where welding from both sides or welding from one side with backing is ( POSSIBLE )? Usually a joint comprised of two HSS members does not allow for welding from both sides but it might be possible and depending on the joint configuration backing may be possible, if so then it can be a prequalified Procedure.
3)Nonprequalified Joint Detail : There are no prequalified joint details for CJP groove welds in butt joints made from one side without backing. If you notice there is no prequalified Joint details shown in Clause/Chapter 3 that are welded from one side without backing.

That doesn't mean that you cant Qualify one to suit your needs, it may cost a bit but it might save a bunch in the end.

Good Luck
I hope this helped more than hurt

Correct me if I'm wrong, a procedure (TYK) can be written on circular tube? see 3.13.5 I agree with you on the HSS, I have others  (CWI'S)who don't see it this way , the extra verbage such as (Possible) leaves avenues open to one's own interpretation? Why I wonder do they differentiate between HSS tube and circumferential tube, I could run both 5p and cap low high. I see 3.13.4 (2) no prequal CJP groove welds with the following 3.13.5 allowing CJP leaving me confused??, Anyone going to share a opinion on this question?

1)Question Can a prequalified procedure be wrote,( written) for (HSS) with no backing? No  Yes, if it is a PJP weld (I seen nothing in OP that said welds had to be CJP)

Oh, maybe I read too deep, with OP writing of backing and welding from one side and lest I forget OP referred to Clauses found in 3.13 CJP Groove Weld Requirements.

Just giving you a hard time, although there have been instances where the EOR has allowed a  PJP weld in place of a CJP

I guess I'm still confused,  Clause 3 @ 3.13.2, BACKING: Prequalified CJP groove welds made from one side only, EXCEPT AS ALLOWED FOR TUBULAR STRUCTURES, shall have steel backing. If someone could read from 3.13 to 3.13.5.1 and look at figure 3.6 and you will see where my original questions and comments came from. Worked in and welded to a few different codes through the years, but never seen one as gray as this.

In addition to Marshall's response.

An issue of acronyms ?

If  "HSS" is an acronym for High Strength Steel,  again the answer is no..  as high strength steel would not be found in a D1.1 listing of prequalified metals.

Maybe it means something else.?

HSS = Hollow Structural Steel

Hollow ... Ok... Gotta log that one in the memory banks..

Thank you Hohn.

Disregard previous post  :)
