Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / requalification of welders Electrode change???

hi all, someone supports me with their knowledge and affirms this, or is wrong.

I have 2 WPS
WPS "X" for welded joints under material specifications (group I) with (group I)
The following steps of welding electrodes that are listed:

Welding process  process      Filler metal
                                       class - diameter
1  root                SMAW  E-6010 - 3/32”
                          SMAW  E-6010 -1/8”
2  hot Step          SMAW  E-6010 -5/32”
3  filling               SMAW  E-7018 -1/8”
                                                  5/32”
4  view                SMAW  E-7018 -1/8”

I have this WPS qualified welders, AWS D1.1 allows me to apply these welders weld using WPS "Y"??
and
WPS "Y" for welded joints under material specifications (group II) with (group II)
The following steps of welding electrodes that are listed:

Welding process  process  Filler metal
                                      class  diameter
1  root                SMAW  E-7018  3/32”
2  hot Step         SMAW  E-7018  1/8”
3  filling              SMAW  E-7018  1/8”
4  filling              SMAW  E-7018  5/32”
5  view               SMAW  E-7018  1/8”

According to Table 4.12 of AWS D1.1 2006, understand that these welders must WPS requalify to "Y".
My interpretation is that correct?

really appreciate your assistance, rusbeli

More information is required to properly assess your situation.

For instance, is backing used? Does the WPS call for an open root?

Until all the details are known, it would be no more than a SWAG on our part to offer an opinion.

Is the welder current qualified and if so, what were the conditions of the test taken by the welder?

MKNIK

I read your question as if a welder is qualified to weld with 6010, is he also qualified to weld with 7018 per table 4.12?

Table 4.12 (2) says "To an SMAW electrode with an F-number higher (see Table 4.13) than the WPQR electrode F-number".
So look at Table 4.13 and 6010 is in group F3, and 7018 is group F4.  So if your welder is certified to F3 he needs to re-test to an F4 to be certified to 7018.
This is why most coompanies when certifiying welders automatically use an F4 group so that they are certifed for any group under it (F3,F2,F1)
Hope this helps.

and in this case, I can use the wps "Y" as the welders were qualified with the "X" in the first welds see that was done with E-6010 and E-7018 subsequent (F4), and WPS "Y" requires all do with E-7018 (F4)?

thank you for your attention

Correct,  Use the Y as in your original description, then the welders are qualified for both X and Y (6010 and 7018).
