Is aisi 1018 material the same as astm 1018?  Astm 1018 is a group 2 prequalified material.  We want to weld some coupler material which is aisi 1018 to a572gr.50.  Do we need a pqr, or can we submit a prequalified wps?

Here's a link to an article that shows the chemical, physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of AISI 1018.  You can compare those with the ASTM A1018 spec.  The link also shows other designations that are equivalent to AISI 1018.  Basically, if AISI 1018 is not a prequalified base metal, you can't submit a prequalified WPS.

AISI 1018 is actually not a steel at all. It is a chemical range designation. To my knowledge AISI does not determine the manufacturing specifications of actual steel as does ASTM.

AISI generally only specifies the chemistry of the base metal. The manufacturing process and the state of final heat treat isn't address, hence the mechanical properties are not usually stated. AISI materials are usually the feed stock for various manufacturing operations like machining, forging, stamping, etc. where a final heat treatment is used to provide the desired properties.

ASTM on the other hand specifies the melting method(s), forming operation, final heat treatment, chemistry, and mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, etc.

You can get your dog at the pound, the pet store, or a breeder. You can get your steel at the scrap yard, the warehouse, or directly from the mill. it all depends on the pedigree you are willing to pay for.

AISI 1018 is a different animal from ASTM 1018. They are not interchangeable.
