Dear All

I don't understand some wording per AWS D1.1 : 2010 on para 4.37.2

" The acceptance criteria for each test shall be specified
in contract drawings or specifications, and shall
consist of the following:
(1) Minimum individual value—the value of which
no one specimen may be below, and
"

What it mean as above ?

My understanding is we can accept on one specimen obtained lower absorbed energy than specification.

I haven't had much experience with CVN requirements over the years, but my interpretation would be that nothing below the minimum individual value is acceptable unless the specs indicate otherwise.

In D1.1, the Engineer has to specify the test temperature and he has to define the minimum acceptable values for the absorbed energy.

Dear Al,

if the Engineer haven't define the minimum acceptance individual values for absorbed energy ?

After I checked project specification, I couldn't found the minimum individual values.

They has to specify the minimum average values.

You direct the question to the Engineer and ask for the information.

Refer to AWS D1.1:2010, clause 2.3.2 and clause 4, Part D.

The clause you reference is for a standard 3 piece set of Charpy test specimens. Each of the three pieces must meet some minimum value. If the absorbed energy is too low for any of the three samples, the PQR fails. If option B is specified, only 3 of the 5 are included for acceptance. The 2 samples that are discounted is the (one) highest and the (one) lowest test value. The three remaining are included in the final evaluation. If any one of the three included in the evaluation has a value lower than the minimum, bad news, the PQR fails. Also two of the three specimens must have a value equal to or more than the average value of the 3 piece set. If two specimens are lower than the average, do not pass go, start again.

Best regards - Al
