Hi guys we are working under AWS D1.1 contractor is using a pre qualified joint configueration for a full pen weld with backing bar
maximum allowable root opening is 5/8 ". we have several plates that were cut to short resulting  in a root opening of over 1 1/4"
fit up was rejected due to excessive root opening. engineering came back and said to build of edges of plate to  close up root opening
these plates were not taken apart for build up weld metal was simply built up on backing bar and edge of plates. in my opinion I feel hat this is
no longer a prequalified joint and a qualification plate must be run duplicating the excess root opening to prove that this is a sound weld.
these plates vary in thickness from5/8" to 1" some are A572 carbon steel some are duplex stainless  should a prequel plate be required
any imput greatly appreciated

Depends on the engineer to give final yea or nay.  They are already involved so just ask.

But, that is not a problem if the weld were brought in only along one side and the backing bar was not 'connected' to the second side until after the opening was brought to tolerances and allowed to cool before starting the 'tie in' pass.

If tied together prior to that then the engineer should give the final acceptance.
