Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / Need Clarification - AWS A5.4-92: E 310-16 Vs E 430-15

Dear All,

Good Evening,

I would like to know whether the electrode E 430-15 is better than E 310-16 or not?

Application details are mentioned below :

Hard facing on Butterfly valve seat rings
Alloy presently used : AWS A5.4-92: E 430-15

One of my co worker has suggested AWS A5.4-92: E 310-16 instead of AWS A5.4-92: E 430-15, I would like to know whether I can use E 310-16 instead of E 430-15, if yes please help me how it can be superior than E 430-15 in terms of life and quality.

Please do the needful.

Regards,
Ranjith.

Hello Ranjith, consider that a change in electrode type may not follow the requirements of your WPS, if you are bound by particular code requirements. In any case, you may need to run this by the company engineer if this is OEM production, or you may need to consult with the engineer associated with the buyer of these parts. I have no doubt that you will receive very educated and viable information from a large number of forum members here. But, if your company's procedures don't support an electrode change in the correct manner this information will be of no use to you. Good luck and best regards, Allan

The ability to change your filler metals, or even evaluate your current filler metal will be based upon the substrate and resulting mechanical properties needed.
Neither of which have been included.
Keep in mind 430 is a ferritic SS whereas 310 is fully austenitic.

Ranjith,
to answer your question
310 ss is harder than 430 ss, in the annealed state
combine them you form a duplex stainless steel, which is basically being done...
but it is now about how much of each is in the weld metal ie dilution:eek:
also need to think about pre and post heat
you have many more things to think about
than just filler metal
consulate a welding engineer, who then needs to consulate a welding metallurgist....
both should then consulate me:roll::surprised::wink::twisted::evil::eek::lol::razz:
ok maybe not me:red::wink:
sincerely,
Kent
