Dear Experts,

In AWS D1.1:2015, clause 9.19(4) allows the welder qualification of CJP welds in T-K-Y joints with backing with a test piece of joint detail in fig. 9.22(B). But in table 9.13, to qualify all CJP position in T-K-Y, welder has to be tested in 6GR position with joint detail of fig. 9.25 & 9.27 only. Is it not possible to qualify the welder in all position CJP in T-K-Y with backing, with the former detail in 6GR?  Pls advise.

Thanks & Regards,

It might be possible if you can get the EOR to approve it. As long as you never ask, the answer will always be "no". As the D1.1 commentary states, “because of the special skills required to successfully execute a CJP weld in tubular T-Y-and K connections, the 6GR level of welder qualification for the process being used is always required”. The commentary goes on to further state “If the contractor wishes to qualify a welder without existing 6GR status, using box tubes, the welder is to weld the 6GR test assembly of Figure 9.25 and Figure 9.26 using either a round or box tube in conformance with the limitations of Table 9.14. In addition, the welder is to pass the corner macroetch test using Figure 9.27 or, if box sections were used, Figure 9.25 or Figure 9.26, by passing a macroetch test on the corner sections of the test weldment.”
