Good Day everyone!

A Welder is welding production pipes with groove positioned as per attached photo. Checking his ID with details below:

Welder's qualification  ID:
Code: ASME + (API 5L for essential and supplementary variables)
Welding Process: GMAW
Mode: Short-circuiting
Type : Semi Automatic
API Grade: Qualified up to X65
F-number: 6
Weld position: 2F
Thickness: All (qualification=22mm)

Production WPS/PQR with Groove position: 1G

Appreciate any comments for this.Thanks

Question???

Welder is qualified for short circuit.... Production sheet parameters are for spray

Welder is qualified for fillets..... Production is grooves

A quick glance shows this for starters

Hi Lawrence,

Is this a Spray transfer mode?
Semi-Automatic GMAW 1.2mm wire diameter,
Ampere=230~250,
V=31~32,
Typical welding Speed=8~12mm/sec,
Heat Input Range=5~8KJ/cm

how about this?
Automatic GMAW 4.0mm wire diameter,
Ampere=900~1000,
Voltage=20~21,
Typical welding speed=50~60mm/sec
Heat Input Range=2~4KJ/cm

Welder should be qualified as per Table QW-461.9  -  Pipe-Groove @ 2G test position ?

Thanks,
Are Aye

Welder should be qualified in 3G position, anything more than 15 degrees is no longer flat and 2G is horizontal welding.

That's from AWS though, not ASME but the intent is usually the same.

Welding position shown in the photo is not quite what is specified in the WPS either...
