Hello everyone!
I have a doubt about the root inspection of tension welds.
According to note 3 of table 6.3, welds classified as tension welds, shall have an increase of sensibility during scanning of the root face area.
My doubt is how to measure this area... I mean, how much of the joint is considered root. Here we have a double V joint, backgouged. My first thought is to consider the nose preparation.
Does anybody knows if there's a common sense about the subject?
Thanks a lot.

What code?

You could consider 1/3 the total thickness to be the root if you want to. Use 1/4 the thickness if you think it more appropriate for thick joints. The point is, one is attempting to ensure there is no incomplete joint penetration or incomplete fusion in the area of the root bead(s) or the back gouge in the case of double groove welded joints.

Hi Al
The code is AWS D1.1.
And sorry for my mistake, but we do not use the backgouge process!
Thanks for your help!
