I was wondering if anyone could answer a question for me about a WPS.  I was curious, if using one of the prequalified joints in D1.3, can a base metal from another code be used?

If it isn't listed in D1.3, it's not prequalified.

Jason,

Al is correct.

However the new AWS D1.3 2018 is complete.    I'm unsure if it is for sale yet.

The latest revision has an expanded prequalified base metal listing.

Tell us the base metal you are using and I will check it against the 2018 code.

I just happen to have a digital copy :)

If it is not listed, let your heart not be troubled... PQR's in this code are pretty straight forward.

Thanks for the info..  The steel will be ASTM 1008 CS type B and ASTM 1011 CS type B.

I did a very quick check and noted that both ASTM 1008 and ASTM 1011 are on the list for type 1, II & III,  however the CS designator was not.

There were SS, HSLS and several other designators...

Don't know if your base metals can be cross listed...

But AWS D1.3 is now available and on the streets so you can check for yourself and see if you can make your situation work with prequalified WPS's.

But as mentioned several times, PQR's are pretty easy to do.

Thank you for the reply and checking into it.

Thanks for the replies.  I think I got it worked out.  The base metal being used is out of ASME, but we are having to use D1.3 for the qualification(sheet).  So, what I have found is that we will have to do a wps and a pqr for it.  Thanks again and if anyone has anymore information they'd like to share, it is greatly appreciated.

Qualifying a WPS per the sheet metal code is a snap. The testing regiment is about as basic as it gets.

Thanks for the replies and info..  So, let’s say for instance, I tested someone, welding a piece of 7 gauge to 12 gauge, that would also be the qualification range?  That is what it is looking like to me, anyway.  Thanks again for the help.

Thanks for the reply. I have looked at it.  From what I read, if I qualify them on the thicker(7 ga.), they will be qualified from 16 ga. to 7 ga.?  Thanks again for the info..
