We have a problem with an outside inspector. He is claiming that it is illegal to weld in the K-section of I-beams with stiffeners and connection plates. I have gone through D1.1 and AISC and I can not find where it says there shall be no welding in the k section. In AISC, i found where it is not recommended but doesnt say its illegal. Please Help

If Sisemic
See AWS D1.8  2009     Clause 4.1  C-4.1  and Figures C4.1 & C4.2

It's a seismic requirement, as Lawrence has shown. I always like to ask the inspector to show me in the code where it states that something is not allowed. That usually shuts them up :)

Ditto what the others have said.

Edit: I did have a set of job specs one time that prohibited welding in the "k" area.
