Up Topic Welding Industry / Processes / Need help: oxy-acetylene tee joint

While practicing for the Washtenaw Community College Welding Competition, I've sort of run into a wall. The tee joint on the print is proving very difficult to weld. I'm welding on 14 ga steel plate with a #1 torch tip at ~5 psi for both gasses in the flat. Most of the time it's difficult to get both pools to fuse and when they do it's hard to get the pools to move. On the best welds, there's terrible undercut on the upper toe. Any advice is helpful. Thanks!

It's been so long since I've Oxy-Fuel welded, I couldn't begin to offer advice, but I do have a question.
People often confuse the T-Joint "Flat" (1F) position with the "Horizontal" (2F)  position.
"Horizontal" T-joints like to undercutt on the top toe, while "Flat" does not.
Are you sure that you are setting up your practice plates in the correct position?

Very true Tim, 1F and 2F are often confused.
