Dear Collegues:
I have a doubt.
How to weld a bimetallic wear plate ( ST 37 6 mm SAW clad 4 mm with Chromium Carbides ( 32% ) and with a percentage of 3.5 - 4. 0 Carbon ) ?
I know that the ST37 is easily welded but in the application is impossible to reach the base plate ( for instance, in a emergency repair ).
Which alloy is best suitable ? The application dont have any kind of special requests regarding welding quality, is more to a emergency repair.

The base metal, that is the carbon steel part is exposed by gouging out the chromium carbide layers by means of grinding or arc gouging. Then a suitable vee-groove is made on the carbon steel to weld it with E7018 or any suitable semi automatic filler. Once the welding is done, the cap is flushed with the base metal surface. The removed chromium carbide is filled by suitable hardfacing electrodes for example CHROMOCARB N 6006 ( from CASTOLIN ) which have a similar carbide content.

You will experience cracks, called stress relief checks when you weld the hard facing electrodes but the cracks are superficial and not harmful if the service condition is not corrosive. Most of the wear plates are welded by this process

Try a stainless 307 type (18 Cr - 8 Ni - 6 Mn) for emergency repair ... works fine, but you can expect cracks in the HAZ
