I am needing some parts for a r57 idler for an sa 200 welder. I am despirate for any advice. I know there are idler up grades out there but the welder isnt used very much and I hate to sink $400 dollars into an idler up grade. Is there any place in the U.S. to find a solenoid for the old vacuum idler. All help highly appreciated. Thanks

If the vacuum pot still works, you could install an air valve to allow you to select high or low idle. You could also just install a hand throttle control. Jeff

Or, you could just pin it at high idle like everyone else does.

is there a pc board that will control the solenoid on the r 57 idler ? mine works but won't delay on high idle
Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 01-14-2008 14:56
R57's idle your machine down when the solenoid is activated, creating a vacuum. When the vac is released your machine idles up. There is no board to control the R57.

could it be the solenoid that is causing the problem ?
Parent - By KSellon (****) Date 01-15-2008 14:27
What problem are you having? You said no delay on high idle, I'm not understanding. Please explain.

mine wont idle up when you hit the grinder, but will idle up when you weld. the grinder turns, but slowly. when at high idle, it works right. this is on a 60 model machine. I have a 66 that idles up when you hit the grinder(or whatever was plugged in). both are running the r-57.
Parent - - By 52lincoln (***) Date 02-24-2008 18:09
it might have a grind ease on it and the other dont.
Parent - - By banshee35 (**) Date 02-24-2008 23:00
what does this grind ease look like?
Parent - - By 52lincoln (***) Date 02-25-2008 00:22
i dont know what it looks like, never actually seen one .i just know that is what it does.i think it looks like a half roll of times attached to your idler with to wires coming off of it
Parent - - By banshee35 (**) Date 02-25-2008 00:29
they both are/were set up the same. both had the r-57 on them. the 66 was converted to weldtrons solenoid kit about 2 years ago. the 66 would idle up with the r-57 on it when u hit the grinder, the 60 will not right now.
Parent - - By 52lincoln (***) Date 02-25-2008 00:52
did it just start or has it never idled up when you hit the grinder?
Parent - - By banshee35 (**) Date 02-25-2008 01:44
I honestly don't know the history of the idler except for the last week. I just bought this particular machine last saturday. It had a twist lock style 115 volt plug on it. i just swapped that to a regular plug yesterday so i could plug in grinders and stuff. the grinder turns with the voltage the machine produces at idle, it just don't rev up like its supposed to. when you strike an arc, i kicks up quick. thanks.

it aint supposed to.that is how it works, you will have to pin the idler up,or upgrade it with a pc board and or grind ease

The 'grind-eze', (I think they spelled it that way), was simply a solenoid valve that attached between the R57 idler and manifold vacuum line. The leads to the added solenoid were in series with the auxiliary power giving you a 'power idler'. When nothing was running from front panel receptacle, the R57 acted normally. When grinder was triggered, added solenoid fired releasing vacuum from R57, allowing engine to rev. Looked like the normal solenoid valve on all mig welders.
Now on the pc board business, actually there was a board built for the R57 that fed a reduced 12vdc to the R57 if arc was struck or grinder activated. Therefore, you had, with it, an added power idler and the original weld idler. The felt was removed from R57, making it act instantaneously, leaving the timing function to the added pc board. Worked quite well, but I am not sure if it is still produced. Can check if anyone is interested. weldersales
If there are two machines with the original R57 intact and one revs with grinder and one does not (as Lincoln intended and built all vacuum idler machines), the one with the power idler function has a 'grind-eze' solenoid added or the pc board as described above added sometime in its lifetime.

i got ya now. the '66 had the grind eze on it. i replaced the internals of the 57 with the weldtron kit. im gonna put the grind eze on the '60 model and see if it works. do you kno wof a wiring diagram for this?
Parent - - By weldersales (**) Date 03-05-2008 18:48
It is still available. weldersales

do you happen to know how it wires up? in series w/ the outlet and the existing vacuum solenoid?
Parent - By KSellon (****) Date 03-08-2008 15:52
B- call Tom Fowler with Hybriweld for hook up. If done improperly you WILL burn up the solenoid
Parent - - By KSellon (****) Date 02-25-2008 16:33
The R57 only idles up on weld. If someone put a 'grind ease' on the R57 it would idle up with a grinder. Your grind ease could have gone bad.

do you have a wiring schematic for the grind eze? im gonna put the one i took off the '66 sa200 and put it in the '60 model. i know one wire goes to the 115 plug but i aint sure about the other wire. thanks
