Is my interpretation of paragraph 5.24.4.1 correct?
5.24.4.1 is only applicable if contract drawings require the weld to be flush, not applicable when contract drawings require convexity.
( double V girth seam weld with convexity SAW / B-U3C-S joint designation from the client) Contractor does not want to fill underfill.
Thanks in advance

5.24.4.1 only applies to flush surfaces (butt welds), as indicated in the paragraph title. Convexities beyond the allowable maximum in Table 6.1 need to be addressed, but if allowable convexities are removed, the effective throat is reduced, which will reduce the weld strength.

Thank you for the reply. Reinforcement is not an issue, the welds are underfilled from .5 to 2.5 mm. Contractor is under the impression that 5.24.4.1 allows the welds to be underfilled up to 1/32". Again the is no document (drawings, PQR's, WPS,s , etc.) that requires the welds to be flush.

The weld needs to be the same thickness as the parent material as a minimum, and if convex, reinforcement not to exceed that shown in Figure 5.4(D). I don't know if the code gives any underfill tolerances(at least I haven't seen any), "My opinion is" it needs to be at least flush to meet the designer's calcs.

Thanks John! That is exactly my thinking.

I agree. I remember years ago reading something in D1.1 that stated something like "welds shall be filled to the full cross section of the member", but I haven't been able to find it now.

I guess you could use 2.3.1.2 in this situation also. Even though the same size pieces are billed out in the BOM, you will probably get two different thicknesses, although it might be only slightly different. I guess that I'm splitting hairs here, but I hope you get the picture.

Gentlemen thank you for your reply's. I am still having serious issues with the Level III referring to 5.24.4.1 AWS D1.1 as allowing a weld to be underfilled up 1/32". This paragraph relates NOT to underfill but the removal of weld reinforcement to create a flush surface. Thanks again.

Hi Bama,
Go to Table 5.4; when you add paragraphs 5.24 and 5.42.1 your Level III should cringe and bow in homage.
