Aevald,
You may very well be correct.  This was an asumption on my part.  I just saw the red hose on the one reg and figured that since downhand is so thorough, why would he take a shortcut here.  Not saying that if he had a red hose on something else he isn't thorough because i've used lots of red line for purgeing and such and sometimes ya just have to use what cha have. That brings up a question. Does acetylene hose have to be of a special breed for that fact of what flows through it so it will last a long time vs say an oxy hose or an argon hose?  I know you can't run oil through certain hoses because it will deteriate to fast so i thought fuel gas hose might be the same way.

Hello Kix, as I have been informed, the various hose types can, in some instances, have an effect on performance as well as safety when you look at their use. Inert gas hoses and shielding gas hoses are specified for use due to their lack of oils in the manufacturing process, that way you will not suffer contamination of the gas due to oils being present in the hose itself. Other hoses, those used for oxy/acet and oxy/fuel applications are also slightly different. I have been told there are two different types of hoses for this use, R1 and R2, I don't specifically remember at this time which is which, but one of these hose specifications is specifically for use with oxy/acet and the other can be used for either oxy/acet or oxy/fuel. You certainly would not want to use just any hose for oxygen service, especially if there are oils present in the hose, a definite safety issue. Using a hose with oil in it's make-up for inert gas or shielding gas application might not present a safety issue, but could cause contamination of the weld pool through introduction of the oils in the hose. Hope this is what your question concerned. I believe that downhandonly actually might be using oxy/propane on his truck, as I noticed a bottle on the outside, a possibility. Regards, aevald

I think that propane bottle runs the machine.
Parent - - By aevald (*****) Date 09-17-2007 18:14
Hey Kix, I would agree with you if it weren't for the picture showing the 200D lincoln welding machine. Regards, Allan
Parent - - By Kix (****) Date 09-17-2007 18:26
I'm guessing the 200d is not one that you can convert over to propane?  Maybe it's for his cab heater in the winter so he has a place to get warm in the winter so he doesn't put hours on his truck motor, but then again the heat is in the tools. ;-)
Parent - - By aevald (*****) Date 09-17-2007 20:09
Hello once again Kix, the 200D would indicate a diesel welding machine. Argueably, you could say that it has propane injection to increase the horsepower of the engine, but I don't believe that is the case here. I guess further speculation is moot until he replies himself to set us both straight. Enjoying the dialogue. Have a great day, regards, Allan

just my 2 cents........ propane is possibly used to preheat!
Parent - - By downhandonly (***) Date 09-18-2007 00:22
The propane is for preheat and is plumbed in to the hose reel facing the rear of the truck and if you look close you'll see the tiger torch mounted standing up between that and my cable reels. have a good one, thanks everyone for the nice comments

shiny rig, it'd be a shame to take that back to zama and scratch the paint, just kidding Lee I know how much work you did w/ your other skid before getting the deck, you deserve it, P.S. do you still run all that 3/8" oxy/acet. hose? first time I saw it I thought you were a heavy equipment guy or something. lol, Oh, about pipelining in Ft. Nelson I'm off for a couple weeks, they didn't get as much work as first thought??? so we'll see about the winter if they're lookin I'll give ya a shout. Gotta have the MOPAR Muscle, black dodges kick ass

I run a couple of medium sized acetylene bottles in the jockey box between the the two side cabinets (and yes they are standing up) the extra regulator next to the acetylene used to be for oxygen but the hose on the high pressure side of the regs (altough rated three time that of the pressure in the bottle) was making me nervous so I plumbed in one right to the bottle and left that one there to be my spare.

Hello downhandonly, and thanks for clearing up the speculation, really a nice rig. I do imagine you receive many fine compliments on it's construction and function. As far as machine selection goes..... I'll chuckle as others make comment. LOL. Best regards, Allan

Parent - - By Sourdough (****) Date 09-23-2007 16:36
9 times out of 10, you will be tested at every pipe job anyway.....don't spend the money on certs if it wont do you any good. The only certs I'm adamant about keeping current is structural, (4g), because on structural jobs you are required to be papered. Buildings, derricks, etc........

Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 07-15-2008 03:20
How long does it take to finish a joint on 24" cap out?
Parent - - By downhandonly (***) Date 07-15-2008 03:27
well that line we had no brother in laws for the other side so if I remember correctly two fills and a cap was taking us about (rough guess)45 minutes with one welder to a joint with the helper trying to keep the heat in the other side with a liquid propane torch.that picture was taken about 3 years ago and my memory is not so good.
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 07-15-2008 03:32

Parent - - By downhandonly (***) Date 07-15-2008 04:39
nope the bead hands run off a tack rig and the hot passers run off another (kinda like a side boom with welders on it)
Parent - - By texwelder (***) Date 07-15-2008 12:24
What kind of and what size rod do ya'll fill and cap with on that size pipe?

Dude, your set up is great. It doesnt look like the normal set up amd kinda looks cumbersome but is FINE the way you have every thing situated.
Parent - - By downhandonly (***) Date 07-15-2008 23:32
the more things out in the open up here the more you have frozen and not working in the winter. not to mention the crack headed vultures swarming around at night ripping guys off.
