I put a setup like this on most of our work trucks, keeps the final connection away from the batteries and there is no need to open the hoods when having to use jumper cables. Several ways to do it, I have used welding lead or even drops of service entrance wire.

Sberry,
Nice idea. I wonder if you could incorporate the rubber covers that slip over the terminals? This would clearly indicate positive and negative as well as guard against accidental shorting.

I put the hots in a plastic box.

Yeah, pretty neat idea. :-) I will probably do this to my truck.

I have inverter hooked in to this deal too. There is a switch in to kill the input to the inverter.

Hello Steve. :-) I need to do this to my truck and Blazer. I have a set of cables that are abot 20' long and made from cable off a drilling rig. I think this would be the perfect hook up for useing them.

Thanks again Sberry!

Hello John, I attached some pictures to a previous post on this thread. These are of a connector set that they use on some electric forklifts, you might want to take a look at these, they are really versatile. Best regards, aevald

Those are pretty slick as well.

I don't know if they are still available, but Forny [ A company that sells welders and supplies] has [had] a product called "Bumper Jumper" This is a pair of tapered sockets color coded black & red on a mounting plate. The idea was to mount and wire this part on a service truck and put the tapered plugs on 1 end of the jumper cables.

Hello Dave, there is also a set-up/plug-in that is used on electric forklifts that incorporates both leads and maintains polarity for charging purposes. They come in various amperage ratings. I have seen these used on the front and rear of pickups/trucks along with hitch pockets for mounting electric winches on trailer stingers so that you can move the winch from the front to the rear, as well as stow it away when you aren't using it. You can also rig these up with jumper cables to make things cleaner and slicker. I'll see about posting some photos of these tomorrow when I get back to school. It's all about saving time and making everything a bit more compact and readily accessible, all great ideas. Best regards, Allan

Allan, I have seen the connector You pictured on chargers at the scrap yard, but there they only have the 1 end. I have been keeping My eye out for a pair [both ends] of them.

They can be purchased through Grainger and McMaster Carr.

For everyone's information:

A jumper cable set with this type of connector is available from NAPA.

I love it Sberry. I love to see people using what they got to save time and money. I used some extra tweco quick connects(given to me at a shutdown) and welding lead on mine. I no a few people who have done it the same exact way as you have on thier tractors and grain trucks.

Twecos hanging out the grill would be slick too.

I thought about some kind of connectors but wanted to use common jumper cables with common clamps.

Hello Sberry, certainly understand that, you don't always manage to have the "special" stuff when you get into a bind. Great idea all the same. Best regards, Allan

I purchased a similar setup from Northern Hydraulics (I think that's the name, I'll have to go look). I have the jumper hookup permanently to the car battery and I have short leads to a 3000 watt inverter that can be used to power my test instruments (MT and UT) or the house as a standby electrical power supply. It won't power the entire house, but it is sufficient to run the refrigerator, furnace, computer (with APU to take care of any surges), and of course the TV for the grand kids.

Best regards - Al
