Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / How do I properly stagger a skip welded T-joint??

Okay, I have a T- joint that required a staggered 2 on 6 skip weld on both sides. If I start the first side at the beginning with 2 on 6... When I weld the other side do I center my skip welds between the first side? Do I start them even with the start/stop of the first side? What is the correct method???

Nitrorocket1,
  If I am reading your question correctly, I beleive this is the information you are looking for. I have circled the weld symbol I beleive you are refering to and figure 33 C shows how to apply it. Just substitute your increments for the ones shown.

I have seen the weld symbol, but my main question is;

If I start my 2" skip weld at the begining edge of the plate, do I put the fillet on the opposite side of the t-joint starting 2" in from the edge? Or do I center the 2" skip weld exactly between the skip welded 5" centers(I would have to start the fillet 2.5" from edge of plate on opposite side of the plate)??

nitrorocket1,
Double check figure (33C) at the bottom of the second page of jrw159's attachment (reference AWS A2.4). It indicates the staggered intermittent fillet welds on the second side to be centered between those on the first side.

It would be 4 inches in from the edge on the other side in your case. You have to add an inche because you're pulling 3" from the center of your first 2" weld on the first side.  So in other words, the center of you first staggered fillet on the otherside of the joint will be 3" from the center of the first 2" weld on the starting side.  Hope that helps a little.

Based on an interpretation I received from the AWS committee many years ago, the easiest way to interpret the intermittent fillet weld symbol (skip weld is nonstandard terminology) is as shown in the attached file.

One point to mention, do not use AWS A2.4 for workmanship issues. Workmanship is addressed by the applicable welding standard or employer's quality control manual or the drawings.

Best regards - Al
