Hey I was wondering if any one on here has some pictures of any old school clover leaf up hill stick pictures. Prefferably good ones.  I am trying to explain to some one what one looks like.  I looked online but I couldnt find any.  Any info in the right direction would be helpful.

never heard of uphill cloverleaf

heard of downhill butterfly lace, though

I guess by clover leaf are you meaning like a zig zag pattern? Pause on either side, whip through the center? I may have a plate in the shop with that on there. I'll have to go down and check, at least that will give me something to do today besides surf the web.....

I think he means a sideways 8 pattern ... (the infinity sign ) .  It resembles a clover leaf when done correctly .

oh, ok. Have not seen that one. Besides, the stuff I have done in the shop is from last year when I started doing it and surely would not want anybody to see those!

I have actually seen that on some old gas pipe here recently. Is that something they did "back in the day"? Or is it still a pretty common to use? Just curious, that first pic looks real good.

The welds seen in the photos would be discouraged for today's critical applications.  Due to the very wide weave, heat input for the welds shown would be quite high and for today's high strength steels could cause loss of some necessary properties, e.g. CVN's, CTOD's, etc.  For SMAW a weave of 2X to 3X the core wire diameter would be in the range of recommended practice.  Also, the apparent several inch long "arc strike" on the last photo would be something to be avoided.

I just noticed that arc strike your talking about. Wow, that's a doosy! The gas pipe with that type of weld on it that I saw I do recall the cap was REAL wide and made me wonder what the heck? Thanks for the explanation Fred.

Those are classic lace welds. These were done downhill. The gas pocket in the picture is classic.
Hard weld to execute and look good.

I saw one on a vessel today I swear was 1.5 inches wide. I'll try to take a phone pic tomorrow. It looked like a real butterfly multiplied 1000 times. It was huge! How could a weld like that be made? It was cool looking but man, what a lot of work. Your not sh*tting about hard to execute and look good.

Thanks for all the pics.  My College teacher could do one like it came from a machine.  maybe I will try to email him and see if he can send me some pics and I will post them

I build frac heads every now and then that call for a lace cap that large as the final pass. On some of the smaller heads where the nozzles stick out it can get as wide as 2 inches. Its insane but looks beautiful when its finished.
