I must have missed the memo. Oilfield welders here in OK don't carry pencil grinders "never have" one told me yesterday. What a joke. And If an inspector tells you a procedure; follow it are get off my job!

can someone define a pencil grinder?  Like a rotary die grinder?

Right. It is a Large electric die grinder. We use them in the Oilfield to repair washouts in Pumps among other things.  By the way, Alot of Rig Welders in TX, Do now, and always have, carried them on their trucks

I carry a 1/4" Metabo die grinder. I use it to clean the ID of small bore pipe that has sat in the yard and has gotten rusty enough to cause problems. I also use it to transition fittings.
It comes in handy when a small burned hole needs cleaned or reamed  up a bit. Ted

These types of die grinder are also the PREFFERED method for cleaning up weld to NDT w/ PT. Turning of the die perpendicularly to the line of the weld allows better change of a false positive indication on a pt or mt examination. Also good for cleaning up small cracks and hard to reach places. Yeah, yeah, like the part of an IRS agent where the sun don't shine, I know...
