So I put on a wellhead last nite with a "guide",  It is designed as another safety fallback so the BOP does not fall over. Not fun to weld around at all. Just wondering if anyone else (and i am sure someone has) has done one. Anyway have a great monday everyone. Regards shannon

Guide ? Are you talking about the BIG Plate around the bottom that fits on the outside out the Casing ?
Parent - - By weaver (***) Date 01-17-2011 18:58
yes sir, with four vertical gussets all, 1 1/2 iron
Parent - - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 01-17-2011 19:16
I have put on a few of those. And you are right ! It's a B*tch ! They are supposed to fill the cellar full of concrete after you put the Head on. The Plate is a Stabilizer for the B.O.P. and it is to be imbedded in concrete.

Ahh the elephant foot it really sucks if the cellar is shallow too.  But that is why we get "the big bucks" as the hands tell us every time we go out.

If I had a nickle for every time I have heard that ............................... !
Parent - - By weaver (***) Date 01-19-2011 05:32
thats funny, every time I go to a rig.. "well thats why you make all the green".. and on that job i had maybe 10'' under the head
Parent - - By Rig Hand (***) Date 01-20-2011 03:09
Should of took a picture.
I'd like to see this critter...................Without having to weld around it :)
Parent - - By weaver (***) Date 01-20-2011 04:33
If i knew how to post pics i have a ton of welding pics
Parent - - By Pickupman (***) Date 01-20-2011 04:42
In the bottom of your last post look for the attach button. Push it and then search your computer and attach the ones you want too. Then post them. Looking forward to seeing them.

Here is a link that shows the Head he is talking about. It is the second one. The Slip Type. It shows it to be a Non-Welded head. However, the Head that Weaver is talking about IS a Welded Head with the Ring on it as the Picture shows. It MUST be Welded on the Bottom as well as the inside. It has to be pre-heated in order to slip on the Casing.

Man that looks like a pickle...Allot of start and stops with no way to get a grinder in there.. So you have to weld the bottom of the socket in between the legs to the casing then weld the plate to the casing too..??

Whats the advantage of the extra plate on the bottom..??

  RC
Parent - - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 01-20-2011 16:05
No. The plate does not weld to the Casing. Just the Socket inside and out, The plate is to be inbedded in concrete
Parent - - By rcwelding (***) Date 01-20-2011 16:12
Ok that makes a little more sense...

Now sorry for the dumb question but I have never seen a well head go on.. When you say weld the inside do you mean down through the top of the head and welding the top edge of the casing to the socket..??

Yes

Thanks for the link and info Cactus.

Added to my knowledge, very limited that it is.  I've not done anything like that.  Difinitely a different ball game than what a lot of us do.

Again, thanks.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

I will try to get some better pics and links on here showing some more detail
Parent - - By welderbrent (*****) Date 01-20-2011 17:28
If I understand right, the link, and other pages on their website, didn't actually show the weld on type that this thread was about??

It would really be appreciated from me to see a pic of that.  But from what I saw, I think I have a fair idea what you are talking about.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

Here is a link showing where the Head welds. Now put the Ring in your way. And remember, all of this is done in the Cellar, below ground level and you are generally either lying or kneeling in Mud about 2' deep and it is always in the middle of the night.

Okay, now the beginnings of this thread by Shannon and you make more sense.

And having done many weld on saddle/tees for hot taps on water lines, jet fuel lines, etc underground in OR & WA I understand the fun part of being in the mud.  And it never fails, the worst weather days are the ones you pull up on and they have given you almost no clearance under the pipe.  Don't know how many times I have laid in water and mud while welding overhead with my face literally IN the weld.  That was when I could still see good up close.

Anyway, I can see how welding on this in adverse conditions would really make your night a real joy.

Thanks again for the links Cactus.  Would be nice to see some actual pics if one of you guys has some and can figure out how to post them.  It isn't too difficult but did take me a little work the first couple of times.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

I have lost count how many bowls I have welded on, but i can say that maybe less than ten have been in the daylight. lol
Parent - By texwelder (***) Date 01-21-2011 18:57
Yeah why is that they should call them well pigs instead of heads becuase you roll in the slop putting them on, oh what well pigs that are scared of the daylight LOL .

Parent - - By weaver (***) Date 01-27-2011 00:16

Parent - - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 01-27-2011 01:22 Edited 01-31-2011 02:26

Is that 170 an hour plus 100 dollars an inch on the weel head ?
Parent - - By weaver (***) Date 01-31-2011 01:47
It's hourly from the time we leave the shop to when i start cutting the casing. Then It's a flat wellhead rate. From the time I cut the casing to the time I test is usually 1.5hrs or less. As soon as the test is over, back to hourly to we get back to the shop.
Parent - By texwelder (***) Date 01-31-2011 02:10
Man that is awesome pay but its cold as hell in ND right now so you dang sure earn that money
Parent - - By rig welder6 (**) Date 01-31-2011 03:51
Do you guys test with Nitrogen or oil, XOM required nitrogen for their heads
Parent - - By weaver (***) Date 01-31-2011 03:56

Parent - By rig welder6 (**) Date 01-31-2011 04:28

I just tryin to make sure that i have the right adapter to test with up here in CO it was a 1/2" pipe thread in the head havent got a answer as to what the test hole size is here. Xom also req'd 1000psi for 15mins for the test not sure as to the requirement here.  Any help in this area would b appreciated.  Who do you work for up here? you said you are in williston?
