Parameters, 1/2'' x 1/2'' "T" joint, FCAW no joint prep. Can anybody tell me what the max size weld size the D1.1 allows before it is rejected?
Thanks,
Robert Doiron

Is this weld by a pre-qualified WPS?
What position is this welded in?
Is this weld placed in a single pass or multiple passes?

This is just a general question the parameters given in the question was only an example. Looking through the D1.1 I cannot find a specific place e.g. section 6 that allows an oversize tolerance for a fillet weld example: 3/8'' +/- 1/16. I can only find information on minimum size fillet welds.
Thanks for the response.

As John was alluding to there is not enough information for a definitive answer.
If the WPS is a prequalified WPS one of the requirements is 5/16" max. for a single pass fillet weld.
You can use what you can qualify other than that.
Good Luck

Thanks Marshall and I agree that the maximum fillet weld size would be dictated buy the WPS whether it is Pre-qualified or PQR'd.
Thanks again,
Robert Doiron

I guess you can find this in a couple of places:
Clause 3.7.3.2, and...
Table 3.7 under: Max Single Pass Fillet Weld Size

But then again, you didn't specify whether the weld size was to be accomplished in one pass or several.

Thank you John.

You're very welcome

If I understand the question, there is no maximum size limitation except for lap joints. The T-joint is not a lap joint, so the size limitations for the fillet weld often cited by people, i.e., equal to the thickness of the member for materials under 1/4 inch thick and 1/16 inch less than the thickness of member for materials 1/4 or thicker, doesn't apply.

Ah,
One of my favorites …

C-5.13 Conformance with Design.
Either or both legs of fillet welds may be oversized without correction, provided the excess does not interfere with satisfactory end use of a member. Attempts to remove excess material from oversized welds serve no purpose.
Adequacy of throat dimension and conformance to the weld profiles of 5.4 should be the only acceptance criteria.

Cheers,
jb

Look at some of the WWII tanks that have 2" welds on 1/2" plate.
