Anybody ever tried to repair an rv water heater? I have an Atwood 6 gallon that is cracked. I have been able to find out it is clad aluminum, but not much else.
Thought I would make a stab at repairing it before I bought a $550 dollar replacement.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

I do not remember the brand names, but I have repaired two of my own that were broken by freezing.  I used Linde 4043 HQ filler metal, then hydrotested the tank.

They worked fine after that.

What procedure did you use ? Who qualified it ? and to what Code was it welded ? Was it X-rayed ?

I think I've had 4 or 5 in brought in the shop this year. I don't know what the deal is its weird. We did have a pretty hard freeze this year ( Midland Odessa ). I usually just tig them up with 4043 . They weld real well once you get them clean.

Need your "RV" stamp before any welding.

My buddy bought a 30 something foot travel camper for $500 and his tank was busted too. He had a nice little closet and went to the home store and bought a house water heater that was electric. Fit snuggly in the closet, plugged her up and was bigger than the one for the camper and a fraction of the cost, $150 or something. Not sure if he ever fixed the stock tank. I know he said he thought this was better as he didn't have to worry about the gas to heat the water, just plug in at the rv park and wham bam thank you maam.

I have fixed them before, PIA but clean the hell out of it, and try alum wire, i found 4043 to work best, might have to run couple beads grind out then run couple more till it cleans up re-grind and clean up and make a nice pretty weld, or i have patched them too easier i think not as much crap from the inside of the tank...good luck hope it helps
